International Practice of the Firm
A significant part of our practice involves “international” work in the sense that the participants are based in different jurisdictions. This calls for skills that go beyond the purely technical; business men and women from different countries, traditions and backgrounds have different expectations as to the scope and nature of services that their local lawyers are to provide.
We try to get an understanding from the outset of our clients’ expectations; this process is helped by the fact that our lawyers themselves come from different countries and backgrounds. As it is now the language of choice for international business, the members of our team are able to conduct correspondence, meetings and arbitration or court proceedings in English.
Many of our French clients have operations in other jurisdictions. We consider it an essential part of our service to be able to place them to safe professional hands whenever their business takes them away from France. This we can do with our foreign language skills and our position as the French member of TELFA, a closely knit European association grouping more than 600 lawyers. Our senior partner, Charles Campbell, is the current Chair of TELFA.
A privileged relationship developed by TELFA also allows members to call upon the skills of the USLAW network of lawyers. This network is composed of 60 independent member firms in the U.S.A grouping over 3,500 lawyers spread over 45 states.
Our international practice calls us to advise clients notably on the following:
- appropriate legal vehicles for foreign private equity investment in France;
- joint ventures involving partners from two or more different jurisdictions;
- tax and financing issues and the impact of thin capitalisation rules;
- distribution systems for foreign UCITS;
- international staff benefits and remuneration packages.
